The open standards that define how AI agents talk to one another are converging under a single roof. On August 20, the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) announced that Google's A2A protocol had joined as an official project. With Anthropic's MCP already in place as a founding project, the two axes underpinning the agent economy now live inside the same neutral body.
How the Two Standards Differ
The key is a separation of concerns. Both A2A and MCP are agent-centric protocols, but they operate at different layers of the stack. MCP, donated by Anthropic as a founding project, standardizes the vertical connection between agents and tools or data — how a model reaches local resources, search results, or enterprise databases. A2A, developed by Google, governs the horizontal communication in which two autonomous systems negotiate tasks, exchange identity credentials, and maintain state across organizational boundaries.
As the AAIF frames it, "Where A2A fits is at the collaborative edge; where MCP fits is at the tool integration edge." Bringing both under one roof signals that the era of siloed, per-vendor agent protocols is ending.

Why Rivals Are in the Same Room
The AAIF Platinum roster reflects a rare moment of industry consensus. AWS, Anthropic, Block, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are all signatories to the governance model. More than cooperation, analysts read it as a defensive move against the fragmentation that recurs with every new technology cycle. Once the infrastructure stabilizes under neutral governance, the competitive center of gravity shifts from owning a protocol to the quality of an agent's reasoning and the depth of its tool access.

A2A shipped its first stable release (v1.0) in March 2026, adding multi-protocol bindings and version negotiation, multi-tenancy, and "signed agent cards" for cryptographic identity verification. It already runs in production across mobile platforms, cloud AI infrastructure, financial services, supply chains, and enterprise IT.
What It Means for Developers and Enterprises
For enterprise developers, the payoff is immediate. Instead of picking a "Google camp" or an "Anthropic camp," they can build on a combined architecture that handles both communication (A2A) and tool integration (MCP). For context, MCP already counts more than 10,000 published servers, and OpenAI's AGENTS.md has been adopted by over 60,000 open-source projects. As standardization advances, security patches and data-flow verification can propagate faster and more rigorously.

- Google's A2A officially joined the Linux Foundation's AAIF on August 20, landing next to Anthropic's MCP
- MCP is the vertical agent-to-tool link; A2A is the horizontal agent-to-agent one
- AAIF grew from 49 founding members to 250+, with rivals AWS, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI all in the Platinum tier
- The standards stay separate projects but their roadmaps are aligned to stay complementary
- Developers get a combined communication-plus-tool-integration architecture without vendor lock-in
