Anthropic has once again reshuffled how subscribers reach Claude Fable 5, its most capable model. As of July 20, Fable 5 is formally included in Max and Team Premium plans, but usage is held to 50% of each plan's limits. Pro and Team Standard subscribers, by contrast, no longer get Fable 5 bundled by default — they can use it only by drawing down usage credits. To soften that transition, Anthropic is granting those users a one-time $100 credit.
What is changing
The core of the change is who gets Fable 5 inside their subscription. Higher tiers (Max and Team Premium) gain always-on access to Fable 5, but at half the normal limit. Lower tiers (Pro and Team Standard) lose bundled access entirely and must burn separate credits to reach the model. In effect, Anthropic is nudging its top model toward premium plans and pay-as-you-go usage.
Max / Team Premium Fable 5 included, capped at 50% of limits
Pro / Team Standard Access via usage credits + one-time $100 credit
Prior step Bundled at up to 50% of weekly limits for Pro/Max/Team and select Enterprise, July 1–7
Why the staged approach
Anthropic has said Fable demand has been challenging to predict. Rather than opening the model to every plan at once, it chose a staged rollout that widens access as capacity is secured. Fable 5 was previously included for Pro, Max, Team and select Enterprise plans from July 1 to 7 at up to 50% of weekly usage limits, after which it moved to usage-credit access. This latest step settles that pattern into always-on inclusion for higher tiers (at half the limit) plus metered access for lower tiers.
| Segment | Before (Jul 1–7) | Now (Jul 20+) |
|---|---|---|
| Max / Team Premium | Bundled up to 50% of weekly limits | Formally included, 50% of limits |
| Pro / Team Standard | Temporary inclusion, then credits | Credit-based access + one-time $100 |
| Access logic | Time-limited opening | Capacity-based, always-on |
What it means
The move is a case study in how frontier labs address a shared problem — who pays for expensive inference — through plan design. Unlimited access to a top model is hard to sustain on capacity and cost, so Anthropic grants premium tiers always-on access but tightens the limit to half, while steering lower tiers to metered usage. For users, the heavier your Fable 5 usage, the more likely you are to need a higher tier or added credit spend. The one-time $100 credit reads as a cushion against pushback during the transition.
- From July 20, Claude Fable 5 is included in Max and Team Premium, but capped at 50% of limits.
- Pro and Team Standard lose bundled access, shifting to usage credits with a one-time $100 credit.
- The change reflects a capacity-driven, staged rollout for a model with hard-to-predict demand.
