TL;DR — At WWDC26 (June 8, 2026), Apple unveiled Siri AI — a complete rebuild of Siri using next-generation Apple Intelligence and Apple Foundation Models. It understands personal context from your messages, emails, and photos; reads what's on your screen; answers questions from the web; and syncs conversation history privately across all your Apple devices. Developer testing starts immediately on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27.

A Complete Rebuild, Not an Update

Apple's approach to AI has often been characterized as cautious — incremental improvements wrapped in strong privacy guarantees while competitors raced to add features. WWDC26 marks a clear departure. Siri AI is not an update to the Siri that has existed since 2011. Apple says it rebuilt the assistant from the ground up around a "bold new architecture uniquely designed to protect users' privacy," powered by the next generation of Apple Foundation Models running on device and in the cloud via Private Cloud Compute.

Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of Software Engineering, described it as "profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable." Apple is betting that the combination of privacy-first infrastructure and a rebuilt intelligence layer can close the gap with competitors that have built their AI assistants on less private, but arguably more capable, foundation models.

What Siri AI Can Actually Do

Personal Context Understanding

Siri AI can search across your messages, emails, photos, and other on-device data to find exactly what you're looking for — without you having to remember which app it's in. "Find the recipe mom sent me last week," or "What time is my next flight?" work without opening any apps.

Onscreen Awareness

Siri AI sees and understands what's currently displayed on your screen. It can read, interpret, and act on visible content — making context-aware suggestions or performing actions based on what you're looking at.

Broad World Knowledge

When your personal data doesn't have the answer, Siri AI goes to the web and synthesizes a direct response — not just a list of links. This is the capability Apple has historically been most cautious about shipping, given privacy implications of cloud-side processing.

Dedicated Siri App

For the first time, Siri gets its own standalone app. Users can review past conversations, continue where they left off, and kick off new ones from a single place. Conversation history syncs privately across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro via iCloud.

Expanded Systemwide App Actions

The list of cross-app actions Siri can execute has been substantially expanded. Multi-step tasks that cross app boundaries — "Edit this photo and send it to the group chat" — become possible with a single natural language request.

For Developers
Deep Siri AI integration is built on SiriKit and the App Intents framework. Apps that implement App Intents can surface their functionality through Siri AI's systemwide actions. iOS 27 developer betas are available now through the Apple Developer Program — start building integrations today.

Privacy Architecture: Private Cloud Compute

Privacy is where Apple draws its sharpest line against competitors. When a Siri AI request requires cloud-side processing, it goes to Private Cloud Compute — Apple-operated servers that process the request and then delete the data immediately. Apple claims that neither Apple nor any third party can access user data during or after processing, and that outside experts can verify this promise at any time through independent auditing.

Processing Path Location Data Retention
On-device Apple silicon Stays on device
Private Cloud Compute Apple servers Deleted after processing
Third-party AI (e.g., ChatGPT) External servers Outside Apple's control

EU Availability Note
Due to regulatory compliance challenges, Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS. Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will have access when the language is set to English. Apple stated it is "working hard to find a path forward that preserves its users' privacy and security" in the EU context.

Timeline and Availability

  • June 8, 2026: Developer testing begins (iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, visionOS 27)
  • Later in 2026: Public beta available for English-language users with supported devices
  • watchOS 27: Developer testing in a future beta release
  • EU (iOS/iPadOS/watchOS): Not available initially; Mac and Vision Pro users supported
Key Takeaways
  • Siri AI is a complete ground-up rebuild, not an incremental update to the 2011 Siri
  • Personal context understanding searches your messages, emails, and photos directly
  • Onscreen awareness lets Siri read and act on what you're currently viewing
  • Dedicated Siri app enables conversation history with cross-device sync via iCloud
  • Private Cloud Compute handles cloud requests with no data retention — independently auditable
  • Developer beta available now; public beta later this year (EU iOS/iPadOS excluded initially)
